Amex and Airbnb: A Vote of Confidence in Short-Term Rentals and a Reminder That Trust Matters
American Express’s new partnership with Airbnb is good news for the professionally managed short-term rental sector.
The partnership will bring more than one million Airbnb listings into American Express Travel, giving eligible US Card Members access to a much wider range of homes alongside traditional hotel inventory. Card Members can earn Membership Rewards points, while Consumer and Business Platinum Card Members can earn 5X points on eligible prepaid Airbnb bookings.
For an industry that has spent years demonstrating that a home can be a credible alternative to a hotel, this is significant validation. American Express clearly recognises that travellers increasingly want more space, greater flexibility and a wider choice of accommodation.
But the detail also tells us something important: access to inventory is only part of the equation. When a trusted travel brand puts its name—and its most valuable benefits—behind alternative accommodation, confidence in the underlying product still matters.
American Express Travel is not Amex GBT
The first distinction is between American Express Travel and American Express Global Business Travel.
The new Airbnb partnership sits within American Express Travel, the cardmember-focused leisure and small-business travel service. Travellers begin their search through AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel app, connect their Amex and Airbnb accounts, and complete their reservation through Airbnb. Changes, cancellations, host communication and post-booking support also remain with Airbnb.
This is not the same as distributing Airbnb inventory through the Global Distribution System, nor does it mean the inventory has been introduced into the corporate booking environment used by American Express Global Business Travel.
Amex GBT is a separate company and one of the world’s leading travel management companies. It helps organisations manage business travel through established corporate booking, reporting and servicing infrastructure, including content accessed through the GDS.
That difference matters. The new partnership gives Amex Card Members a more rewarding route into Airbnb. It does not, by itself, make the wider Airbnb marketplace part of a company’s managed travel programme.
The Luxe detail is revealing
The partnership covers a broad selection of Airbnb inventory, but the most valuable Platinum benefits are much more selective.
The renamed $600 Lodging Credit is available for qualifying prepaid Airbnb Luxe stays of two nights or more. Booking an eligible Luxe stay can also unlock a further $250 credit for Airbnb Experiences.
Airbnb describes Luxe as a curated collection representing less than 1% of its global listings. Every Luxe property must complete an in-person walkthrough by a local Home Consultant before being accepted. Properties must meet additional standards covering design, construction, amenities and guest experience, and their status remains subject to ongoing review.
In other words, American Express is embracing the breadth of short-term rental supply, but it has reserved its strongest financial endorsement for the part of that supply carrying an additional layer of physical assessment and quality control.
That does not mean good properties cannot be found across the wider Airbnb marketplace. It does mean that the same level of property-level inspection is not universal.
For the short-term rental industry, this should be encouraging rather than uncomfortable. It shows that major travel brands see the demand. It also confirms that verification, consistency and professional management become increasingly important as this inventory moves into trusted travel programmes.
Where TrustedStays is different
At TrustedStays, our focus is not on creating another consumer marketplace. We are building the infrastructure that allows professionally operated homes and serviced accommodation to participate in managed corporate travel.
Through our GDS distribution, eligible TrustedStays properties can become searchable and bookable through the same global infrastructure that travel agents and TMCs have traditionally used to access hotels. That includes buyers such as Amex GBT, alongside other major travel management companies, corporate travel programmes and government bookers.
This produces a fundamentally different route to market:
- The Airbnb–Amex partnership is a cardmember proposition that ultimately completes and services the booking through Airbnb.
- TrustedStays distributes professional short-term rental inventory into the B2B systems already used by corporate travel buyers.
- Airbnb Luxe applies additional assessment to a very small premium subset of Airbnb listings.
- TrustedStays is designed around professionally managed, quality-assured and compliant supply suitable for business travel.
Our suppliers must be professional operators and members of an appropriate industry body. We conduct baseline quality and compliance checks and work with recognised independent accreditation providers, including Quality in Tourism. Properties are then distributed with live rates and availability through established corporate booking channels.
This is particularly important for organisations with responsibilities extending beyond finding an attractive place to stay. Travel managers must consider consistency, safety, duty of care, reliable servicing and whether accommodation can be accessed through the company’s approved booking process.
A property being available online is not the same as it being ready for managed corporate travel.
A positive signal for the whole sector
American Express’s decision should be welcomed. It brings further credibility to home-style accommodation and confirms that travellers value alternatives to the traditional hotel room.
It also helps move the industry conversation forward. The question is no longer whether travellers want professionally managed homes. They clearly do. The next question is how that inventory can be delivered with the assurance, distribution and operational consistency expected by major travel buyers.
Airbnb and American Express are addressing that opportunity through a cardmember marketplace and a highly curated Luxe tier.
TrustedStays addresses it from the other direction: enabling quality-assured professional inventory to enter the established corporate travel ecosystem through the GDS.
These models are different, but the direction of travel is the same. Short-term rentals are becoming a more important part of the accommodation mix. The operators that combine distinctive properties with professional standards, reliable data and trusted distribution will be best placed to benefit.
